This Masterclass contains everything you need to know about performance tuning of PL/SQL applications. tim_hall

Tim Hall (Birmingham, UK) is an Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) DBA (7, 8, 8i, 9i, 10g, 11g), Oracle Certified Associate (OCA) PL/SQL Developer, Oracle ACE Director and was chosen as Oracle ACE of the Year 2006 by Oracle Magazine Editors Choice Awards. He has been involved in DBA, design and development work with Oracle databases since 1994.
He has gained a wide knowledge of the Oracle software stack and has worked as a consultant for several multi-national companies on projects ranging from real-time control systems to OLTP web applications. Since 2000 he has published over 300 articles on his website (www.oracle-base.com) covering a wide range of Oracle features.

Masterclass Description:

The program starts by introducing the current best practices for PL/SQL performance, many of which can be implemented in existing applications and result in "quick fixes" for performance problems. Each case is illustrated with a simple example demonstrating the performance improvements associated with the best practice.

Then, the more complex best practices, such as array processing, data caching and memory management are covered in greater detail, allowing the attendees to understand not only the technicalities, but also the practical implications of using such methods.

Alternative methods for packaging and presenting data are discussed, including cursor variables and REF CURSOR types, along with table functions and pipelining. These techniques will be used to show how a PL/SQL API layer can be used to turn a RAD tool, in this case Oracle Application Express (APEX), into a serious enterprise development tool.

The methods of monitoring and profiling PL/SQL to identify problem code are demonstrated, so that performance tuning can be focused onto the areas where it is most needed.

In addition to performance related material, there is an explanation of the new features available to PL/SQL developers in Oracle 11g.

By the end of the seminar attendees will be confident they can identify what they need to do to bring ailing PL/SQL applications up to date, as well as making sure new application are "right first time".

Objectives:

1) Demonstrate all the current best practices for efficient PL/SQL programming.
2) Introduce techniques for speeding up and reducing resource utilization of existing code.
3) Demonstrate the techniques available to identify poorly performing code.
4) Introduce the new PL/SQL features available in Oracle 11g.
